A long, low 24:9 screen, with a soft night light built in.

This dual baby car camera has a 6.9 inch ultrawide screen in a 24:9 shape, so two seats sit side by side without squashing either picture. Its stand-out feature is the built-in ambient light, with six options, for night drives. Two ear-shaped cameras strap to the headrests.

Why the screen's so wide

A 24:9 screen is longer and shorter than a normal monitor. Split down the middle, each half comes out close to a standard picture shape, so faces aren't stretched or cropped. The low profile also sits neatly on the dash.

A glow you can switch off

A glow you can switch off

The monitor has built-in ambient lighting with six options. It's a soft glow, not a reading lamp, and you can turn it off if you'd rather keep the cabin dark. None of our other dual kits have it.

Ear-shaped cameras, two seats

The two compact cameras have a little ear-shaped housing and rotate to aim at their own seats, rear-facing or forward-facing. They strap to the headrests, and the maker shows them as shock-proof and drop-resistant. Both have night vision for evening drives.

Dash or mirror, no tools

Dash or mirror, no tools

Mount the monitor on the dash or near the rear-view mirror, wherever your eyeline's comfortable. Strap the cameras on, point them, place the screen and plug in. A quick-start guide is included, and it's simple to move between cars if grandparents share the school run.

Home from Nan's after dark

Sunday dinner at Nan's ran late and it's a dark drive home with two in the back. Leave the ambient light on low so the cabin isn't pitch black, and you can see both kids on the wide screen with a quick glance. When one wakes up wanting a drink, you pull over rather than reach back.

Glance, don't watch

Glance, don't watch

It's a driving aid, not a replacement for your mirrors or your attention. Look only when it's safe, set the cameras before you head off, and place the monitor where it won't block the road.
