Stretch fabric · Indoor or outdoor

A soft cocoon that hangs from the ceiling or a sturdy branch. The fabric stretches and wraps around, so a child sits enclosed rather than perched — and most of them, once they are in it, stay in it.

Why children settle in it

It is the wrap that does the work. Because the fabric is stretchy rather than rigid, it closes gently around whoever is sitting in it and spreads pressure evenly instead of pressing on one spot. Combine that with slow rocking and you get the quiet, contained feel that makes these swings a fixture in sensory play rooms, occupational therapy spaces and a great many bedrooms.

It is not a piece of equipment that needs explaining to a child. They climb in, they spin, and that is usually that.

More than one way to use it

Sit and spin The classic. Gather the fabric, sit in, and turn.
Cocoon Wrapped fully for a quiet, enclosed space to retreat to.
Lie back Opened out as a hammock for reading or resting.
Stretch and hang Older children and adults use it for supported stretching and gentle inversions, the same way an aerial yoga hammock is used.

Indoors or outside

The fabric is weather resistant, so it is as happy on a verandah, balcony or a sturdy tree branch as it is on a bedroom ceiling hook. Bring it in if it is going to sit in weather for weeks, and let it dry fully before storing.

Sensory swing used outdoors

Before you hang it — please read this part

This takes a person's full bodyweight. How it is fixed matters more than anything else on this page.

  • Fix into structure, never plasterboard. It must go into a ceiling joist, a solid beam, or a purpose-rated swing hook installed into one. A plasterboard anchor will pull out.
  • An adult should install it and check the fixing, the hardware and the fabric for wear before each use.
  • Supervise young children, and keep the swing clear of walls, furniture and corners through its full arc.
  • Check the weight limit in the instructions supplied with the swing and do not exceed it. We have not been given a figure by the manufacturer, so we are not going to quote one — if the packaging does not make it clear, contact us before use and we will chase it up for you.
  • Outdoors, check the branch or fixing again after wind or heavy rain.

Common questions

What weight will it hold?
Check the figure in the instructions supplied with the swing. The manufacturer has not published one to us and we will not guess at it on a product that carries a child. If it is not clear on the packaging when it arrives, contact us and we will get it confirmed.
How do I hang it safely?
Into a ceiling joist, a solid beam, or a rated swing hook fixed into one. Never into plasterboard alone. An adult should install it and check the fixing before each use.
Can it go outside?
Yes. The fabric is weather resistant and it suits a verandah, balcony or a solid tree branch. Bring it in for long periods of bad weather and dry it fully before storing.
Is it only for children?
No. Older children and adults use it for supported stretching and gentle inversions in the same way as an aerial yoga hammock, within the weight limit in the instructions.
Does it come with everything to hang it?
It comes with a universal mounting kit that assembles without tools. Depending on your ceiling or beam you may still want a rated swing hook suited to your structure — worth checking with a hardware store if you are unsure.
How do I clean it?
Spot clean and allow it to dry completely before folding or storing.
